Overview

Amoxicillin + tetracycline is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection, often as part of a quadruple therapy regimen. Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type, bactericidal antibiotic that interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death during the bacterial multiplication period. Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum, bacteriostatic antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by reversibly binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit in bacteria, preventing tRNA attachment and thus blocking peptide chain formation. The combination leverages both mechanisms for enhanced antibacterial activity against H. pylori; however, some evidence suggests potential antagonism between these agents due to their differing actions on bacterial growth phases[2][8]. This regimen is considered an alternative when other therapies are unsuitable or resistance rates are high[2][8].
