Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ampicillin + clavulanic acid is a combination antibiotic consisting of the penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic ampicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid. Ampicillin acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death in susceptible bacteria. Clavulanic acid inhibits bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes that would otherwise degrade ampicillin, thereby extending its spectrum of activity to include organisms that produce these resistance enzymes. This combination is used to treat a variety of infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and others[6][7]. The drug can be administered orally or intravenously.
