Overview

This is a combination of five antibiotics—ampicillin, gentamicin, clindamycin, metronidazole, and ceftazidime—used together to provide extremely broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage. Each component targets different classes of bacteria or mechanisms: - Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic effective against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative organisms. - Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic primarily active against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. - Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic with activity against anaerobic bacteria and some Gram-positive cocci. - Metronidazole is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa by disrupting DNA synthesis. - Ceftazidime is a third-generation cephalosporin with strong activity against many Gram-negative organisms (notably Pseudomonas aeruginosa) but less so for most anaerobes[1][2][3]. This combination may be used in severe polymicrobial infections where multidrug-resistant or mixed aerobic/anaerobic pathogens are suspected.
