Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ampicillin + metronidazole is an antibiotic combination used primarily for surgical prophylaxis and treatment of mixed aerobic/anaerobic infections. Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic effective against many gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria, while metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic specifically targeting anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage and is particularly useful in gynecological surgery prophylaxis and treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis.
