Overview

Ampicillin + netilmicin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by enterococci and other susceptible organisms. Ampicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic (penicillin class) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death[3][5]. Netilmicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA in bacteria[9]. The combination exhibits synergistic bactericidal activity against many strains of Enterococcus species (notably Enterococcus faecalis), as well as enhanced activity against certain Gram-negative pathogens. This synergy makes it particularly useful in severe infections such as endocarditis caused by enterococci[4][9]. Both drugs are administered parenterally due to poor oral absorption (netilmicin) or for severe infection (ampicillin). Monitoring for nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity is important due to the aminoglycoside component.
