Ampicloxacillin + metronidazole is a combination drug consisting of two antibiotics with complementary mechanisms of action. Ampicloxacillin is a fixed-dose combination of ampicillin (a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic) and cloxacillin (a penicillinase-resistant penicillin), while metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa. This combination is used to treat mixed infections where both aerobic Gram-positive organisms (targeted by ampicloxacillin) and anaerobic bacteria (targeted by metronidazole) are suspected, such as intra-abdominal, gynecological, dental, or diabetic foot infections. Ampicloxacillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis. Metronidazole acts by entering the cells of susceptible organisms and generating free radicals that damage DNA, resulting in bacterial death[2][4][5]. The combined use provides broad-spectrum coverage for polymicrobial infections.
