Overview

Amubarvimab + romlusevimab is a combination of two neutralizing recombinant human IgG1 monoclonal antibodies targeting distinct, non-competing epitopes on the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. The antibodies block viral entry by inhibiting interaction between the spike protein and ACE2 receptor on host cells. This cocktail was jointly developed by Brii Biosciences, Tsinghua University, and the Third People’s Hospital of Shenzhen. It received conditional approval in China in December 2021 for treating mild COVID-19 in adults and high-risk adolescents aged 12–17 years with bodyweight ≥40 kg to prevent progression to severe disease or hospitalization. The combination retains neutralization activity against several variants of concern and has demonstrated efficacy in reducing risk of hospitalization or death among high-risk outpatients with mild to moderate COVID-19[1][2][5][6][7].
