Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Amylmetacresol + dichlorobenzyl alcohol is a fixed-dose combination of two mild antiseptic agents used for the local treatment and symptomatic relief of sore throat, pharyngitis, gingivitis, and minor mouth and throat infections. Both active ingredients function as broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiviral agents that help reduce the microbial load in the oropharynx. In addition to their antiseptic properties, both amylmetacresol and dichlorobenzyl alcohol exhibit local anesthetic-like activity by reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, specifically SCN2A (NaV1.2), which provides rapid and long-lasting pain relief. The combination is widely marketed globally under various brand names, including Strepsils, and is available in Portugal as Mentocaína Mel e Limão, developed and marketed by Laboratórios Azevedos.
