Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Strepsils con Vitamina C is an over-the-counter medicated throat lozenge used for the symptomatic relief of mild mouth and throat infections, such as sore throat, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis. It is a fixed-dose combination containing two mild antiseptics—amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol—alongside vitamin C (ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate). Amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol exert broad-spectrum antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral effects by denaturing microbial proteins and disrupting cell membranes. Additionally, amylmetacresol provides local anesthetic-like pain relief by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels (specifically SCN2A). Vitamin C is included to support immune function and provide antioxidant defense during infections. Originally developed by Boots Healthcare, the Strepsils brand is currently owned and marketed globally by Reckitt.
