Anakinra is a recombinant, non-glycosylated form of the human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra). It works by competitively inhibiting the binding of both interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) to the Interleukin-1 type I receptor (IL-1RI), thereby blocking the downstream inflammatory signaling pathways mediated by IL-1. Researchers at the University of Athens Medical School investigated anakinra as a potential treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic and debilitating inflammatory skin condition. In a Phase 2, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial (NCT01558375) conducted at Attikon University General Hospital, daily subcutaneous injections of 100 mg anakinra were shown to significantly improve clinical outcomes, with a high percentage of patients achieving a Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Response (HiSCR) compared to placebo.
