This is a combination therapy consisting of Andrographis paniculata, a medicinal plant extract with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective properties, and interferon beta-1a, a recombinant protein used as an immunomodulator in the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Andrographis paniculata has been traditionally used for its anti-inflammatory and immunostimulant effects. Interferon beta-1a is commonly prescribed for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) to reduce relapse rates and slow disease progression. Clinical studies have investigated the addition of Andrographis paniculata to standard interferon beta-1a therapy in RRMS patients; results suggest that this combination significantly reduces fatigue compared to interferon alone or placebo. The mechanism involves modulation of immune responses by both agents—Andrographis through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhancement of antioxidant defenses, while interferon beta-1a modulates immune cell activity to decrease central nervous system inflammation[1][3][4]. The combination has shown good tolerability in clinical trials.
