Angiotensin (1-7) is a naturally occurring heptapeptide of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) that is being investigated as an experimental biologic therapy for severe COVID-19. Developed by researchers at the Kanuni Sultan Suleyman Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey, this specific intervention involves the supplementation of plasma-derived angiotensin (1-7). The therapy is based on the hypothesis that SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to a deficiency of angiotensin (1-7) by blocking the activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which normally converts angiotensin II into angiotensin (1-7). By administering plasma from donors with angiotensin (1-7) levels 8-10 times higher than normal, the treatment aims to activate the Mas receptor pathway, which exerts anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, and lung-protective effects to counteract the hyper-inflammation and pneumonia associated with severe COVID-19.
