Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A preclinical-stage live biotherapeutic product being developed by Medosome Biotec that uses engineered Lactobacillus probiotic bacteria (specifically Lactobacillus paracasei) to orally deliver the Angiotensin-(1-7) peptide for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and other vascular disorders. [1] The therapeutic approach involves genetically engineering the bacteria to express and secrete Ang-(1-7) as a fusion protein with a trans-epithelial carrier to facilitate its uptake into circulation. [2] The mechanism of action targets the protective ACE2/Ang-(1-7) axis of the renin-angiotensin system, which counteracts the harmful vascular effects of Angiotensin II. Preclinical studies in diabetic mouse models have shown that this oral administration can reduce retinal capillary damage, prevent retinal ganglion cell loss, and decrease inflammatory cytokine expression.
