Overview

Anhydrous citric acid + gluconolactone + magnesium carbonate is a **small molecule combination irrigation solution** marketed as **Renacidin** for urological use. It is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution indicated for dissolution of **struvite** and **apatite bladder calculi** by local intermittent irrigation through a urethral catheter or cystostomy tube, and for **prevention of encrustations** of urethral catheters and cystostomy tubes. Its effect is mediated by a **chemical dissolution mechanism rather than a specific biological receptor target**: the acidic solution helps solubilize struvite calculi, while magnesium in the solution exchanges with calcium in apatite stones to form more soluble magnesium salts. It has also been used as adjunctive therapy to help dissolve residual calculi after surgery or facilitate removal of renal calculi. The product is manufactured by United-Guardian.
