Overview

antazoline + tetrahydrozoline is a topical ophthalmic combination therapy consisting of the antihistamine antazoline hydrochloride and the decongestant tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride. Antazoline is a first-generation H1-receptor antagonist that competitively inhibits histamine binding, thereby reducing allergic responses and ocular irritation. Tetrahydrozoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that induces vasoconstriction of the conjunctival small blood vessels, effectively reducing ocular redness (hyperemia). This specific formulation, containing 0.05% antazoline and 0.04% tetrahydrozoline, was utilized by researchers at Khon Kaen University as a control arm in a randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of intralesional bevacizumab for the treatment of primary pterygium. While the combination is a standard treatment for symptomatic relief of allergic conjunctivitis, in this trial context, it served as the comparator for managing pterygium-associated inflammation and redness.
