Anti-BCMA CAR-T cells (also known as 1XX BCMA CAR-T cells) is an investigational, autologous chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy developed by Thomas Martin, MD, at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The therapy involves collecting a patient's own T cells and using CRISPR-Cas9 technology to genetically engineer them to express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) targeting B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA). BCMA is a protein highly and selectively expressed on malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma. Following lymphodepleting chemotherapy with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide, the engineered cells are expanded and infused back into the patient to induce targeted cell lysis of myeloma cells. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for the treatment of relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM).
