The anti-HIV-1 VHH antibody (COGNANO) is a preclinical nanobody candidate developed by the Japanese biotechnology company COGNANO for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infection. This single-domain antibody (VHH) is derived from alpaca heavy-chain-only antibodies and is engineered to target the HIV-1 Envelope (Env) protein. By binding to the Env spike, the nanobody aims to neutralize the virus and prevent its entry into host CD4+ T cells. The small size of VHH antibodies allows them to potentially access conserved, sterically hindered epitopes on the viral surface that are often inaccessible to conventional monoclonal antibodies, which may help in overcoming the high genetic diversity and mutational escape of HIV-1.
