Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Anti-rabies serum (ARS) is a polyclonal equine-derived immunoglobulin produced by Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation Ltd. for the post-exposure prophylaxis of rabies. It is manufactured through the hyperimmunization of horses with rabies antigens, followed by the purification of equine plasma via enzyme digestion and chemical separation to obtain purified equine immunoglobulins. The product provides immediate passive immunity by supplying neutralizing antibodies that bind to and neutralize rabies virus particles at the site of exposure, preventing the virus from entering the central nervous system before the patient's own immune system can respond to active vaccination. It is typically administered via local infiltration around the wound site and intramuscular injection, and is primarily used for Category III rabies exposures.
