Anti-Rh(D) IgG opsonized autologous red blood cells is an autologous cell therapy used for the treatment of chronic, refractory autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The therapeutic process involves collecting a patient's own red blood cells (RBCs) and opsonizing them ex vivo with anti-Rh(D) immunoglobulin G (IgG). Upon re-infusion, these opsonized RBCs are cleared by the spleen, which effectively saturates and blocks the Fc gamma receptors (FcγR) on splenic macrophages. This competitive inhibition prevents the macrophages from destroying antibody-coated platelets, thereby increasing the platelet count in patients with ITP. This approach is considered a cost-effective alternative to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or systemic anti-D immunoglobulin therapy.
