This combination is a multi-drug immunosuppressive regimen used primarily in the setting of islet cell transplantation for patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. It consists of induction therapy with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG), a T-cell depleting polyclonal antibody, and basiliximab, a monoclonal antibody targeting the IL-2 receptor (CD25). Maintenance immunosuppression is provided by tacrolimus, a calcineurin inhibitor, and mycophenolate mofetil, an inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH). The regimen is designed to prevent allograft rejection by targeting multiple pathways of T-cell activation and proliferation. It has been investigated in clinical trials led by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (AZ-VUB) to evaluate the long-term survival and function of transplanted beta cells.
