Overview

This combination therapy consists of an intrastromal injection of a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor and topical antiviral eye drops. Developed by the Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, the regimen is designed to treat corneal neovascularization (CNV) resulting from herpes simplex keratitis (HSK). The anti-VEGF agent targets and inhibits the signaling pathways responsible for pathological vessel growth in the corneal stroma, while the antiviral medication addresses the primary viral infection. This dual approach aims to reduce corneal opacity and improve visual outcomes by simultaneously treating the cause and the complication of the disease.
