Overview

A combination of an anticoagulant and an antiplatelet refers to the concurrent use of two classes of blood-thinning medications, each with a distinct mechanism for reducing the risk of blood clots. Anticoagulants (such as warfarin, heparin, apixaban, rivaroxaban) inhibit specific proteins in the coagulation cascade to prevent clot formation. Antiplatelets (such as aspirin, clopidogrel, prasugrel, ticagrelor) prevent platelets from aggregating and forming clots. This combination is often used in patients at high risk for thrombotic events—such as those with atrial fibrillation who have undergone stenting or have acute coronary syndromes—to provide enhanced protection against heart attack and stroke. However, combining these agents increases bleeding risk and requires careful clinical monitoring[2][8].
