The antioxidant cocktail is an experimental multi-component drug intervention developed by the VA Office of Research and Development to investigate the role of oxidative stress in respiratory plasticity. Studied primarily in the context of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the cocktail consists of oral Coenzyme Q10, Superoxide Dismutase, and Vitamin E, supplemented by intravenous Vitamin C. Its mechanism of action involves the neutralization of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that are hypothesized to mediate the progressive augmentation of the hypoxic ventilatory response and ventilatory long-term facilitation (vLTF) following intermittent hypoxia. By reducing oxidative stress, the cocktail aims to mitigate the abnormal respiratory and autonomic plasticity observed in OSA patients.
