This intervention combines early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) with a 6-month course of isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) in HIV-infected adults. The goal of this combination is to reduce severe HIV-related morbidity and mortality, specifically by preventing tuberculosis, which is a leading cause of death in HIV-infected individuals in sub-Saharan Africa. The trial demonstrated that both early ART and IPT independently and additively provide significant clinical benefits even in patients with high CD4 counts.
