antiretroviral therapy + interleukin-2

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) combined with interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a therapeutic approach for HIV infection. ART works by suppressing HIV viral replication, while IL-2 is a cytokine that regulates the proliferation and differentiation of lymphocytes. When used together, this combination has been shown to induce greater expansion of CD4 T cells than antiretroviral drugs alone. IL-2 is typically administered in cycles, either subcutaneously or intravenously, alongside continuous ART. While the combination significantly increases CD4 cell counts, clinical trials have not demonstrated improvements in important clinical outcomes such as reduced mortality or opportunistic infections compared to ART alone.
