Antivenin (latrodectus mactans) is a biologic immunizing agent used to treat serious symptoms caused by bites from the black widow spider (Latrodectus mactans). It is typically administered intravenously or intramuscularly under medical supervision. The drug contains antibodies that neutralize the effects of the neurotoxic venom, which acts on myoneural junctions and nerve endings, causing severe pain, muscle cramps, and potentially life-threatening systemic symptoms. The mechanism of action involves binding to and inhibiting spider venom components; however, its precise pharmacological mode of action in humans remains incompletely characterized. There are two main forms: a traditional equine-derived whole IgG product developed by Merck & Co and an F(ab')2 fragment-based product developed by Instituto Bioclon/Rare Disease Therapeutics[1][2][3][4][5][6].
