Overview

AP3.0 + Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis is an experimental oral microbial therapy consisting of the probiotic bacterium *Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis* (specifically strain GIM 1.207) encapsulated within an advanced enzyme-triggered, colon-targeted microcapsule (AP3.0). This delivery system is designed to protect the live biotherapeutic from the acidic environment of the stomach and bile salts in the small intestine, ensuring targeted release in the colon where microbial enzymes trigger the microcapsule's degradation. The formulation is primarily investigated for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, where it aims to restore gut microbiota balance, enhance the abundance of beneficial taxa such as *Bacteroidetes* and *Firmicutes*, and reduce intestinal inflammation by modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines. Preclinical studies suggest it may be more effective than standard anti-inflammatory treatments like mesalazine in regulating intestinal flora and alleviating colitis symptoms.
