Apatinib + topotecan is a combination therapy being investigated for the second-line treatment of relapsed or progressive small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Apatinib is a small-molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor that selectively targets vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2), thereby inhibiting tumor angiogenesis. Topotecan is a cytotoxic chemotherapy agent that acts as a topoisomerase I inhibitor, interfering with DNA replication and inducing cell death. This combination is being evaluated in clinical trials, such as those led by the First Hospitals affiliated to the China PLA General Hospital, to determine if the addition of an anti-angiogenic agent enhances the efficacy of standard second-line chemotherapy in SCLC patients who have failed prior platinum-based treatments.
