Arginine aspartate is a small molecule salt composed of the amino acids L-arginine and L-aspartate, primarily used as a metabolic tonic to treat muscular fatigue and physical asthenia. L-arginine acts as a precursor for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis via nitric oxide synthase, which promotes vasodilation and may reduce lactic acid buildup by inhibiting glycolysis. L-aspartate participates in the urea cycle and the malate-aspartate shuttle, facilitating the clearance of ammonia and enhancing fatty acid oxidation. Originally developed by Laboratoires Sarget and now part of the Sanofi portfolio, the drug is marketed under brand names such as Sargenor and Targifor. It has been evaluated in clinical trials for its ability to improve muscular performance and resistance to fatigue in healthy adults.
