**Arginine glutamate** is a 1:1 amino-acid salt of L-arginine and L-glutamic acid administered as an intravenous injection for adjunctive management of hyperammonemia associated with chronic liver disease. Following intravenous administration, it dissociates into arginine and glutamic acid. Its ammonia-lowering activity is attributed to support of hepatic nitrogen disposal, including increased hepatic arginase activity and provision of arginine for urea-cycle ammonia detoxification. Chinese post-marketing clinical research has evaluated arginine glutamate injection in cirrhosis-associated mild hepatic encephalopathy versus L-ornithine-L-aspartate, with reported noninferiority for clinical improvement, ammonia reduction, and number connection test improvement.
