Arginine glutamate is a small molecule therapeutic consisting of the double salt of the amino acids L-arginine and L-glutamic acid. Developed by Guangdong Shixin Pharmaceutical, it is primarily utilized for the treatment of hyperammonemia and associated hepatic encephalopathy. Upon intravenous administration, the salt dissociates into its constituent amino acids. Arginine serves as a critical substrate for the urea cycle (ornithine cycle), promoting the conversion of toxic ammonia into urea for renal excretion. Glutamate acts as a precursor for glutamine synthesis via glutamine synthetase, providing an alternative pathway for nitrogen metabolism and ammonia detoxification, particularly in the brain and skeletal muscle.
