Arginine hydrochloride + trimetazidine hydrochloride is a combination therapy being investigated by The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Trimetazidine hydrochloride is a small molecule metabolic agent traditionally used for cardiac conditions that acts by inhibiting 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase, thereby blocking fatty acid oxidation. In this oncology context, it is repurposed to disrupt the energy metabolism of cancer cells. Arginine hydrochloride is used as a metabolic modulator targeting energy pathways to exploit the Warburg effect observed in hepatoma cells. The combination is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for patients with advanced HCC who have failed first-line systemic therapy.
