Overview
Arginine loxoprofen + codeine is a fixed-dose combination analgesic consisting of the arginine salt of loxoprofen, a non-selective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, and codeine, an opioid analgesic. Loxoprofen is a propionic acid derivative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain and inflammation by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. The addition of arginine is intended to enhance the solubility and gastrointestinal tolerability of the loxoprofen component. Codeine serves as a centrally acting analgesic that is metabolized into morphine, which then binds to mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system to provide additional pain relief. This combination is being developed by China Pharmaceutical University for the treatment of moderate intensity pain, with Phase 1 clinical trials evaluating its pharmacokinetic profile and safety compared to individual components and other formulations.
