Overview

Arhalofenate + febuxostat is an **oral combination therapy** investigated for the treatment of gout and hyperuricemia. **Arhalofenate** is a uricosuric agent that lowers serum uric acid by inhibiting URAT1, a renal transporter responsible for uric acid reabsorption in the kidney. In addition, it exhibits anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting IL-1β release, which is implicated in gout flares. **Febuxostat** is a non-purine selective xanthine oxidase inhibitor that reduces uric acid production by inhibiting both oxidized and reduced forms of xanthine oxidase. The **combination is designed to achieve greater reduction in serum uric acid levels than either agent alone** by complementary mechanisms (increased uric acid excretion and reduced production), and to reduce the incidence of gout flares, thus providing a potential new option particularly for patients with tophaceous gout or those not achieving target urate levels with other therapies[1][3][7][8].
