Overview

This is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, aripiprazole and paroxetine. Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic that acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, as well as an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. It is primarily used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, major depressive disorder (as adjunct), irritability associated with autism spectrum disorder, and Tourette syndrome[3][7]. Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant that increases synaptic serotonin levels by inhibiting its reuptake in the brain. It is indicated for depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and vasomotor symptoms of menopause[6]. The combination may be used in clinical practice for treatment-resistant depression or when augmentation of antidepressant therapy with an antipsychotic is required; however, this combination carries a risk of drug-drug interaction due to inhibition of CYP2D6 by paroxetine leading to increased plasma concentrations of aripiprazole[4][2].
