Overview
Aripiprazole + risperidone is a combination of two second-generation (atypical) antipsychotics, aripiprazole and risperidone, both commonly used for treating psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Aripiprazole functions primarily as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, as well as an antagonist at serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, exerting a dopamine stabilizing effect. Risperidone acts mainly as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, and is also known to antagonize norepinephrine alpha-2 receptors. These complementary mechanisms target dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission to correct imbalances associated with psychosis and mood disorders. Combination therapy may be considered for refractory cases, with the main risks being additive side effects, especially metabolic changes[1][3][5][6].
