Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Artemether + lumefantrine + albendazole is a combination therapy consisting of the artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) artemether-lumefantrine and the anthelmintic agent albendazole. This regimen is used primarily in public health interventions, such as intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) in schoolchildren, to simultaneously address malaria (Plasmodium falciparum) and soil-transmitted helminth infections. Artemether provides rapid clearance of malaria parasites by generating reactive free radicals upon interaction with heme, while lumefantrine offers sustained schizonticidal activity by inhibiting the formation of hemozoin. Albendazole targets intestinal parasites by binding to beta-tubulin and inhibiting microtubule assembly. The combination has been evaluated by the Navrongo Health Research Centre in Ghana to improve health outcomes like anemia and cognitive performance in endemic regions.
