Overview

Artemisinin + artesunate is a combination of two antimalarial agents, both belonging to the artemisinin class derived from the plant Artemisia annua. Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone with potent and rapid action against Plasmodium species, while artesunate is a semi-synthetic derivative of artemisinin designed for improved solubility and bioavailability. Both drugs act primarily by generating reactive oxygen species that damage parasite proteins and membranes after activation by heme or ferrous iron within infected erythrocytes. This combination would provide an extremely rapid reduction in parasite biomass due to their similar mechanisms but does not represent standard clinical practice, as current guidelines recommend combining an artemisinin derivative with a longer-acting partner drug to prevent recrudescence and resistance[3][4][8]. The primary indication for both drugs individually is the treatment of malaria, particularly caused by Plasmodium falciparum.
