This combination therapy protocol, investigated by IMSS Hospital General de Zona 11 in Piedras Negras, Mexico, is an investigational regimen for the treatment of sepsis and septic shock. The protocol consists of high-dose intravenous ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and hydrocortisone, supplemented with oral B complex vitamins including thiamine (B1), pyridoxine (B6), and cyanocobalamin (B12). The therapy is designed to address the multi-faceted pathophysiology of sepsis by leveraging the synergistic effects of its components: ascorbic acid serves as a potent antioxidant and a necessary cofactor for the synthesis of endogenous catecholamines; hydrocortisone provides essential anti-inflammatory support and restores glucocorticoid receptor function; and thiamine supports cellular energy metabolism while potentially mitigating the risk of oxalate nephropathy associated with high-dose Vitamin C. The regimen was evaluated in a Phase 3 prospective, sequential cohort study to assess its impact on patient mortality and clinical recovery in the intensive care unit setting.
