Overview

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and thiamine (vitamin B1) is a combination of two essential water-soluble vitamins. This combination is used primarily to treat or prevent deficiencies in these vitamins due to poor diet, certain illnesses, alcoholism, or during pregnancy. Both are important cofactors in cellular metabolism and energy production. Ascorbic acid acts as an antioxidant and supports immune function, collagen synthesis, and iron absorption. Thiamine is crucial for carbohydrate metabolism and neural function. In clinical research settings—particularly in critical care—the combination has been studied for adjunctive therapy in sepsis and septic shock based on the hypothesis that they may synergistically restore mitochondrial function, reduce oxidative stress, modulate inflammation, and improve organ dysfunction[1][5][7]. However, recent evidence suggests that while both have biological plausibility for benefit in critical illness (notably sepsis), the combination does not consistently improve survival compared to standard care or thiamine alone[5].
