ASD + CB-MNC refers to a combination therapy involving the administration of cord blood-derived mononuclear cells (CB-MNC) for patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Cord blood mononuclear cells are a heterogeneous population of immune and progenitor cells isolated from umbilical cord blood, including lymphocytes, monocytes, hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells, and other cell types. The rationale for this therapy is based on the immunomodulatory and neurotrophic properties of these cells. Preclinical studies suggest that CB-MNCs may help modulate immune dysfunction and inflammation associated with ASD, promote neuroprotection, enhance synaptic function, and support neural repair. Clinical trials have explored both autologous (self-donated) and allogeneic (donor-derived) CB-MNC infusions in children with autism. Some studies report improvements in core symptoms such as communication skills and attention span; however, results are preliminary and the treatment remains experimental[2][4][5][7]. Combination therapies using both CB-MNCs and umbilical cord mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (UC-MSCs) have also been investigated; some evidence suggests that combined cell therapy may be more effective than either alone[4][5]. The mechanism of action is thought to involve immunomodulation—shifting immune responses from pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory states—and secretion of neurotrophic factors.
