Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aspirin + butalbital + caffeine is an oral combination medication used primarily for the acute treatment of tension (muscle contraction) headaches. It consists of three active ingredients: **aspirin** (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug and analgesic that reduces inflammation and pain by inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes), **butalbital** (a barbiturate that exerts central nervous system depressant effects, including muscle relaxation and sedation), and **caffeine** (a CNS stimulant and adenosine antagonist that enhances the analgesic effects and may cause cerebral vasoconstriction). The combination is prescribed for short-term management only because of the risk of dependence associated with butalbital and the risk of rebound (medication overuse) headaches with chronic use. It is a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States due to abuse potential[1][2][6][7].
