This investigational combination therapy consists of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and folic acid (vitamin B9), being evaluated as an adjunct to standard corticosteroid treatment for acute sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). Developed by Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris, the therapy is based on the hypothesis that SSNHL is driven by inner ear microvascular disease. Aspirin acts as an antiplatelet agent to prevent platelet aggregation and reduce vasospasm, while folic acid is used to lower plasma homocysteine levels, which can have deleterious effects on the vascular endothelium. By targeting the inner ear microcirculation, the combination aims to prevent ischemia of the vestibular and cochlear organs.
