Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aspirin + prednisolone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together, primarily in the management of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by irreversibly inhibiting cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), leading to decreased synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, which mediate inflammation, pain, fever, and platelet aggregation[7]. Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that exerts potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor; it modulates gene expression to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators[9]. The combination may be used in certain clinical scenarios such as autoimmune diseases or reproductive medicine when both antiplatelet/anti-inflammatory effects (aspirin) and immunosuppression (prednisolone) are desired. However, coadministration increases the risk of gastrointestinal adverse events due to overlapping toxicities[1][4]. Clinical studies suggest potential benefits for specific populations such as women with recurrent miscarriage or patients undergoing IVF with immune-related implantation failure[6][8].
