Overview

Atazanavir + ritonavir + lamivudine is a fixed-dose combination of three antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Atazanavir is an HIV-1 protease inhibitor that prevents the cleavage of viral polyproteins, resulting in immature, non-infectious viral particles. Ritonavir acts primarily as a pharmacokinetic enhancer by inhibiting cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A), thereby increasing plasma concentrations and effectiveness of atazanavir. Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase by causing DNA chain termination during viral replication. The combination targets multiple stages of the HIV replication cycle, reducing viral load, slowing disease progression, and improving immune function[1][5][6]. This regimen is indicated for use with other antiretrovirals for managing HIV-1 infection.
