Overview

**atazanavir + saquinavir** is a combination of two HIV-1 protease inhibitors used experimentally in HIV salvage therapy for treatment-experienced patients. Both **atazanavir** and **saquinavir** inhibit the HIV-1 protease enzyme, preventing the proteolytic cleavage of viral polyproteins, thereby blocking the maturation of infectious virions. Atazanavir differs from other protease inhibitors by having less impact on lipid profiles and the potential for once-daily dosing. Saquinavir was the first HIV protease inhibitor approved for clinical use and is primarily administered in the mesylate form. This combination has been investigated for improved tolerability and metabolic profile compared to older regimens[3][7].
