Overview

Atazanavir + stavudine + lamivudine is a fixed-dose combination of three antiretroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Atazanavir is an azapeptide HIV-1 protease inhibitor that blocks the activity of the viral protease enzyme, preventing cleavage of polyprotein precursors and resulting in immature, non-infectious viral particles. Stavudine and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that inhibit HIV reverse transcriptase by incorporating into viral DNA and causing chain termination. This combination targets different stages of the HIV replication cycle to reduce viral load, delay disease progression, and improve immune function[3][4][6]. The regimen has been studied in antiretroviral therapy-naive patients and shown to be effective for achieving virologic suppression[3][5]. The regimen is not available as a single co-formulated tablet but may be prescribed as individual components taken together. It is primarily indicated for initial or second-line therapy in people living with HIV where other regimens are unsuitable or resistance patterns dictate its use.
