Overview

This combination refers to the concurrent or comparative use of two major classes of antihypertensive medications: Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (captopril and enalapril) and beta-1 selective adrenergic antagonists (atenolol and metoprolol). In clinical practice and research, these agents are often studied or prescribed together to achieve synergistic blood pressure reduction in patients with hypertension. ACE inhibitors lower blood pressure by preventing the formation of angiotensin II and increasing bradykinin levels, while beta-1 blockers reduce cardiac output and heart rate by blocking sympathetic stimulation to the heart. Research has indicated that the combination of an ACE inhibitor and a beta-blocker may be associated with an increased incidence of bronchial hyperreactivity compared to monotherapy with either class, a factor relevant for patients with underlying airway sensitivity.
