Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Blokium DIU is a fixed-dose combination antihypertensive medication containing the cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist atenolol and the long-acting monosulfonamyl (thiazide-like) diuretic chlorthalidone. Atenolol reduces blood pressure by decreasing heart rate, myocardial contractility, and cardiac output, while chlorthalidone promotes the renal excretion of sodium, chloride, and water by inhibiting the sodium-chloride symporter in the distal convoluted tubule. This dual mechanism of action provides synergistic blood pressure reduction and is indicated for the management of essential hypertension, particularly in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy.
