Overview

Atevirdine mesylate + zidovudine is a combination of two antiretroviral agents intended for the treatment of HIV infection. **Atevirdine mesylate** (not approved/marketed, closely related to delavirdine) is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that inhibits HIV-1 reverse transcriptase by binding allosterically, disrupting viral replication. **Zidovudine** is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that functions as a thymidine analog, incorporates into viral DNA, and leads to chain termination, also inhibiting HIV-1 reverse transcriptase. The combination targets HIV replication at two mechanistic points in the viral life cycle and was studied for additive or synergistic effects. No evidence of a marketed atevirdine mesylate + zidovudine product was found; atevirdine mesylate itself was only studied experimentally.
